  •
  • David Larwill has played a pivotal role in Australian culture throughout the 1980's and 90's. His imagery has broad appeal with markets expanding offshore.
  • His imagery, created in a naive style, references tribal art and graffiti. The creation of his unashamedly, bright and vibrant imagery has been extraordinarily popular in the broader art market.
  • Larwill in recent times has begun to develop a print career of note, complementing his painting
  • His etchings have been created in conjunction with leading printmakers, Port Jackson Press. His reputation has since developed as one of the most beautiful printmakers in Australia.
  • $100 USD invested in 2000 in a work of David Larwill had an average value of $228 USD in June 2005.
  • Larwill's top price at auction is $83,000.00 at Deutscher-Menzies 2004 against an estimate of $55-75,000K.
  • A relatively young artist to have a track record with a top price and excellent consistency in backup in secondary sales speaks volumes.
  • “Larwill has been undervalued at auction for many years. The recent high prices to some extent corrects this and brings him into line with other leading contemporary artists such as Maguire and Moffat” - Mark Fraser, Sotheby’s.
  • "Larwill over the next 5 – 10 years will rise dramatically…There is a good book on him; he is collected by older collectors who already have sound collections of the Moderns (Blackman, Boyd, Tucker etc) as well as the younger collectors who are only starting to put collections together now. He seems to me to be a very good sound artist to invest in or just to enjoy” - David Cook, Christies.
  • "Artists with room to move in the market:...David Larwill.” - Michael Reid, The Daily Telegraph, July 2004.

  • “Prices for Tim Storrier’s works have shot away to levels more than three times those of the 1989 peak and five times those of 1996.  The previous record of $93,250.00 was easily beaten when “Skyway” made $123,750.00 (est $50-70,000) at Sotheby’s in 2002, before that was eclipsed by “The Wave and Garland” at $221,500.00 at Sotheby’s in November 2002.(auction record).  There were five paintings in 2004 which exceeded $100,000.00 at auction”  Roger Dedman. Australian Art Market Movements Handbook 2005 issue .

  • Of those works sold in 2005, “The Evening Fire (nine mile plain)” offered at Sotheby’s November 28 sale smashed the estimate of $90-120,000.00 achieving an impressive $203,000.00

  • 100 USD invested in 1997 in a work of Storrier had an average value of 402 USD in  December 2005 – Source: Artprice.com

Tim Storrier is now firmly established within the top 2 living Australian artists.   Storrier’s best known and most collectable work features representations of burning ropes and burning logs with red hot cinders. Boy's Own (working title) is an excellent example of his most recent imagery, with his use of burning newspaper.  This new work has been applauded by collectors and critics with the same enthusiam as past bodies of work by the artist.  These print works are ideal for the domestic and corporate market and due their rarity, are a solid investment at current market prices.

  • The newly released collagraph, “Boy's Own” includes all the benchmark Storrier features. Strong in subject matter, utilizing 7 plates and with 50 colours applied by master print maker Paul Smith, this rare collagraph is available in an edition of 70 numbered prints only.

  • Schaller studied fine arts at the Victorian College of the Arts in his late teens after part-studying film and other visual art courses. And today, he still studies life-drawing weekly.

He became a founding member of the renowned Roar studios in the early 1980's, and sold his first painting at 18 during an early Roar Studio show in Prahran.  The group established its enduring reputation at its Fitzroy gallery and since then Schaller has made his way in the world via his own hand, through painting, sculpture and print-making.

Career highlights have included successful solo exhibitions in Australia and overseas as well as acquisition of his paintings and prints by major Institutions such as the National Gallery of Australia.

  • Schaller has an abundant curiosity, and is highly inventive in his selection of materials and work practices. Besides his paintings, his latest focus has been large sculptural forms in wood and limited edition print work.

Polystyrene has been one of the unusual inspirations behind Schaller's current print works - created through a process of dripping "turps" on to the material, which naturally eats deeply into the base.

Schaller came up with this unusual process after spending several months studying traditional print-making methods at Fitzroy's Port Jackson Gallery. (PJP)

The results produced are unique combinations of his famous expressive, colourful style and the high quality prints of Port Jackson Press.

Andrew McIlroy

A Quiet Place III

A quiet place III, 2006

Oil on canvas

102 x 122.2cm

  • Art Equity’s Barrack Gallery last week released an exclusive selection of new oils on canvas by emerging artist Andrew McIlroy to an overwhelming response.

Two thirds of the works on offer were sold within 1 hour.

McIlroy’s style is influenced by both traditional and modernist figurative painting. The artists interest in classical and contemporary work is what makes his style unique.

Landscapes depict an idealized pastoral arcadia and the sublime- continuing the Australian landscape tradition. His work contains references to 19th Century masters such as John Glover, Eugene Von Gerrard and Buvelot.  Other traditional influences include the European classicists- such as Poussin.

In this latest body of work ones sees the influence of the great English painters- notably Joseph Mallord William Turner- the father of modernism and impressionism in Britain.  This links McIlroy’s work to the whole of Western European landscape painting. In capturing the essence of atmosphere, the blurring and diffusion of horizon with light and sky- he is very close to Turner in these works.

McIlroy also shows concern with form, colour, and painterliness- displaying strong similarities to some of the leading names in Australian contemporary art. For example; Tim Storrier, Martine Emdur, Jason Benjamin.

  • His prices are still at emerging artist’s prices- very affordable for large oils on canvas. At $5500 including GST. The artist is placed well at this point in his career to continue strongly in the market place.
